Blood Clots and Yaz Birth Control Lawsuits

Yaz Blood Clots: How DVT Can Cause Post-Thrombotic Syndrome
Estrogen and drospirenone (a synthetic progestin) are two hormones contained in the birth control Yaz, that are known for causing blood clots. There have been studies that have found that combining these two hormones results in a 6.3-fold increase in the risk of abnormal clotting, when compared to individuals not using the hormones. Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, typically occurs in the deep veins of your legs, arms or pelvis. This condition can lead to post thrombotic syndrome, or PTS.

If you have suffered any damaging side effects after using Ocella, Yaz or Yasmin you need to contact an attorney. There are a lot of women across the United States who have filed a Yaz birth control lawsuit.

Blood flows through your extremities to your heart, where it is replenished with oxygen. Veins in your body aid in the process of oxygenating blood in two ways: first, they they ensure blood flow in the correct direction, secondly: they keep blood from pooling in the deep veins.
Deep vein thrombosis leads are clots that block the flow of blood, this obstruction will eventually damage the valves, which leads to further problems. There could be circulation problems, that can lead to symptoms associated with post thrombotic syndrome. Roughly over 50% of patients with DVT will also develop PTS.

Common Symptoms Of Post-Thrombotic Syndrome
Deep vein blood clots lead to chronic swelling and pain at the site of the venous obstruction. If the blockage is severe, you could have persistent aching or cramping, discoloration and skin ulcers, causing the skin's surface to change texture. Post-thrombotic syndrome can lead to intense pain and swelling that could become debilitating dependent on the size, location and amount of clots present in the venous system. Symptoms often times will worsen throughout the day, but will subside at the end of the day once you elevate your affected limb and give them a chance to rest, and allow the blood to flow. Discoloration is commonly due to minuscule drainage from blood vessels into the surrounding tissue. This can lead to an ulcer. If the swelling becomes so severe the skin will start to break down, or order to release the pressure.

Preventing PTS With Compression Stockings
Once a doctor has definitively diagnosed a Yaz blood clot in the deep veins, they typically begin a regimen of anticoagulant therapy. Warfarin and herparin are often given to help prevent any further clotting from occurring. A doctor may also suggest, along with the anticoagulant therapy, the use of graduated compression stockings.
Graduated compression stockings are worn in order to prevent PTS from occurring, or becoming worse. The stockings are worn by patients to help stimulate circulation in the caves and thighs, by applying pressure and thereby pushing the blood from the deep veins towards the heart. The pressure keeps the blood from pooling in the legs, and encourages continuous blood flow to the heart.
The obvious drawback to wearing compression stockings is they can be very uncomfortable, especially if your legs are already swollen. Many patients will stop wearing the stockings because of the discomfort, however in doing so may be placing themselves at a greater risk of experiencing Yaz blood clot side effects, or possibly dislodging a clot.

Dangers Of Yaz And Blood Clots
Deep venous blood clots are extremely dangerous. They can become dislodged from the vein's wall, and travel through the bloodstream and vena cava into the heart. The clots could create a blockage in a critical artery of the heart.

When and emboli lodges itself in the right side of the heart it can cause a blockage within a pulmonary artery. This is what's known as a pulmonary embolism, a potentially lethal condition that can lead to permanent lung damage.

If the emboli travels in the left side of the heart it could pass through the aorta. Once passed through the aorta it could lodge itself into a coronary artery, and could thereby trigger a heart attack. There is also a possibility that it could travel into an internal carotid artery, causing an ischemic stroke.
Women, healthy woman with out a history of abnormal clotting, have found themselves developing clots, and other severe side effects associated with clotting, after using Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella birth control pills. Researchers have discovered women who have taken this birth control, and developed deep vein clots over time, were more exposed to the possibility of developing post-thrombotic syndrome, pulmonary embolism, heart attack or even stroke over time. If you or anyone you know has been afflicted with these side effects after the use of Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella it is important to contact an attorney that is handling a Yaz lawsuit.
